Community Kitchen

We have always wanted to do something for the transgender population in India, (also known as hijras here). Their only source of income is prostitution or beggary. We identified a locality in the red light area in Pune (Budhwar Peth) and met with all 200 of them who live there. They are truly marginalized and ostracized and their stories are heart rending. The elderly amongst them had absolutely nowhere to go. We figured that the least we could do was to feed them one nutritious basic meal every day.

We rented a shop in that area, fitted it with kitchen essentials, hired people from their own community, and empowered them to provide a daily meal to 100 of their own community members, absolutely free of cost. The amount of good will that this has generated has been humbling. Many of them were in tears, overcome with emotion that someone actually cared. Some of them were so malnourished that we couldn’t even look at them in the eye. One guaranteed meal a day has fixed at least one of their basic issues.

Evening Meals

Evening Meals: In collaboration with Encompass, we launched this project on 15th August 2017 in Pune. We have retained the services of a caterer, who cooks hot, fresh, nutritious food for 100 people every day. Each meal (for 100 people) costs 2,600 rupees and donations are received from different sponsors daily. These 100 meals are then distributed to poor and undernourished children in different slums in Pune.

There are 165 students who study and live in this school in Wadki, Pune. The most important requirement here is good nutrition. We provide grocery and vegetables here so that wholesome meals can be prepared for the children of the school in the school kitchen itself. We also provide bananas and milk so that they can have a healthy start to their day.
